POLAND’S AMBER COAST

POMERANIA also known as POMORZE meaning ’Along The Sea’ is a historic region of Europe stretching far back to the early Roman period where traders would travel the ‘Amber Route’ to trade for amber collected from the Baltic Sea shoreline, hence the other name for this part of Poland is the ‘Amber Coast’.

This beautiful region has a rolling countryside interlaced with deep forests and of course miles upon miles of gorgeous white sand beaches. The old sea port of Gdansk has a rich and varied history with a wonderful old town area which has quaint narrow lanes and alleyways that are filled with cafe bars, restaurants and shops, it is a great place to pick up some wonderful bargains or sit outside a small cafe bar sipping an espresso.

A little further up the coast is the port of Gdynia where the Transbaltic ships depart from ferrying passengers and cargo across to Scandinavia.

North of Gdynia is the narrow but spectacular Hel Peninsular which is forested along its 22 mile length and has beaches on both sides, the Baltic Sea on the north side and Gdansk Bay on the south.

The very tip of the peninsular is the old pirate port of Hel which is surrounded by glorious sand beaches on 3 sides.
